An Introduction to the Playlist Model

An Introduction to Blended Learning Playlist Model

In the playlist model, students work through a series of tasks to reach their
learning targets. Typically, students are given choices and can work at their
own pace (though deadlines exist). In gold standard playlists, each student
has an individualized list of tasks aligned to individual needs and abilities.

A key criteria for playlists is that it gives students voice and choice in their
learning while still ensuring they meet their learning objectives. In essence
it’s having tasks with “Must Do’s -- May Do’s.”

In a blended learning playlist, at least part needs to be completed online or
digitally and part offline or analog.

Does it ensure students achieve the learning objectives?
  • Does it align to the learning targets outlined in the Learning Goal & Scale? (chunking, scaffolding)
  • Does it give students various options for acquiring the learning: Reading/Listening/Viewing?
  • Does it give students multiple means in which to practice/process their learning?
  • Does it give students multiple modes in which to demonstrate their learning?
  • Does it give students opportunities to receive real time feedback and opportunities to reflect on their learning?
Is it student centered?

  • Does it give student control & ownership by providing voice & choice? (“Must Do” and “May Do” options)
  • Does it engage and empower the learner?
Does it support differentiation?
  • Does it give students control over Pace, Path, Place, Time?
  • Does it support student enrichment and remediation?
  • Does it support lower and higher order thinking? (Marzano Taxonomy | DOK 1-4)
  • Does it support various learning styles & intelligences?  (Gardners’ Multiple Intelligences)
Does it develop 21st century skills (4 Cs)?

Do students have opportunity for
  • Creativity,
  • Critical Thinking,
  • Communication, and
  • Collaboration?

Does the design follow the KISS principle? Keep It Super Simple
  • Concise directions
  • Clear layout & path
  • Consistent visual cues
  • Appealing: color, graphics, multimedia, etc.
